Hey everyone! So I listened to the Allegiant audio book and I decided "Hmm... I didn't like that ending very much. I guess I could just write a new one." So that is exactly what I did. Now, please note that I am not an experienced writer whatsoever, so please bear with me. It also goes fast, and I'm sorry about that. Anyway, here it is:
Alternate Ending for Allegiant
I slowly got up from the ground. Turning right, I saw the door to the Weapons Lab. I yanked open the large metal door, finally breathing in clean air. I was gasping and filling my lungs with the air. When I looked up, I saw David.
He pointed a gun at me. “Stay where you are!” he shouted, “or I’ll shoot!”
I put my hands up. Suddenly remembering the knife in my back pocket, I came up with a plan. Whipping the knife from my behind me, I flung it through the air into David’s arm. His gun clattered to the floor and his left hand clutched his right arm, just as I’d hoped. I snatched the gun up and searched the room for the memory serum activator. I’d been in the room when Mathew explained the way it looked to Caleb, so I knew what it was.
“There!” I said, mainly to myself, just as I’d spotted it on the counter on my left. I ran to it, repeating the numbers in my head as I ran. 70902, 70902. I got to the activator and punched in the numbers, then pressing the green the button. David’s face get blank. The guards rushed in, and their faces went blank, too.
I walked out of the Weapon’s Lab. Standing in the front entrance was Caleb, a stunned look on his face.
“Thank you,” he breathed. Caleb looked me up and down, eyes settling on my arm. “Your arm,” he said, “Hospital. Now.” His voice sounded like he was mostly telling himself. Then Caleb put his arm under my own and walked me toward the hospital. There were black spots clouding my eyes. My vision was blurry and my body was weak. We made it into the hospital and I was set into a bed. There was yelling and beeps, but I couldn’t decipher what any of it meant. Unconsciousness crept up on me and I drifted off.
Chapter #
My eyes opened to quiet whispers. I heard one say an excited “She’s awake!” and saw faces staring down at me. They became clearer and I saw Tobias, Christina, Caleb, and Cara looking at me wide-eyed. I stared back. Tobias bent down to kiss me, and his lips touched mine softly.
“Tris,” he breathed. His eyes were wide with anticipation.
“Tobias,” I breathed back. Tobias’s expression softened, and he kissed me again. I wished I could kiss him back, but my face was heavy with pain killers. Mathew pushed his way towards me.
“Tris,” he said, “you lost a lot of blood. The bullet wound in your arm needed stitches, and the tissue in your body took a beating from the death serum, but I was able to fix it. You should be out of here in two days and walking in a week. Just take it easy, okay?” I nodded, barely processing what he was saying. I turn to Tobias and Christina.
“Did you get them? Zeke and Hana, I mean?” Both of them met my eyes with assurance.
“Yes,” Christina answers. “They’re with Uriah.” I sigh with relief.
“And your family?” I ask. Christina nods. I look at everyone else. Caleb is talking quietly to Mathew, and I turn to the people by my bed.
“I’m really hungry,” I say. They laugh quietly and nod.
“Mathew said you might be. Christina and I will go and get you some food, okay?” Cara leaned to whisper something to Christina that I didn’t quite catch, and they both giggle. She turned to me again. “We’ll be back. Don’t go anywhere.” I chuckle.
“As if.” I turn to Tobias. Caleb and Mathew had taken their conversation out into the hallway where they could debate in peace. “Sit me up?” I ask.
“Sure thing.” He pulls my back up, wary of my arm, and takes some extra pillows from a nearby chair. I know he has been sleeping here, but I don’t call him out on it. I don’t care. The only thing in this entire world I care about, it seems, is Tobias.
“Perfect,” I say. “Now I can do this.” I pull him closer to me, cupping his face in my hands. It’s easier to kiss him now that I am more awake than before. Tobias kisses me back, softly at first, then harder, as if his life depended on it. For all I knew, it did. He pulls away just long enough to say the words “I love you.”
Cara and Christina burst into the room, both giggling. They stopped suddenly, as if they walked in on something naughty. I glanced at them, too hungry to ignore the food.
“Mathew said liquids only, so here’s some chicken broth,” Cara said. “Drink up.” I grabbed the cup from her hands and lifted it to my mouth. The broth tasted amazing in my unfed stomach and I drink all in one gulp.
“Mm,” I say, after I’ve finished. “Food has never tasted so good.”
A week passes, slowly, as it does when you are confided to a wheelchair or bed. The city, Chicago, was now doing better than ever. The experiment was over, but Johanna negotiated with the government and managed to come to an agreement. The factions were only there for those who wanted them to be, and anyone could come and go throughout the city at any time. Christina, Tobias, Mathew, and I were still in the compound, waiting for injuries to heal. Well, my injuries to heal. Caleb and Cara had both found apartments in the city, and we would soon move in after them, along with Zeke and Hana.
“Hurry!” Christina said, throwing open the door to the dormitory. “Their unplugging him now.” Tobias’s face drained of color, and I felt mine do the same. We both knew she was talking about Uriah without asking.
“Come on,” I say. “We owe this to him.” I grabbed Tobias’s hand. We walked to the hospital in silence. Christina followed behind us. When we got there, everyone else was already standing by Uriah’s bed. Even Caleb and Cara had come back for this. Shawna had come as well and Zeke stood beside her wheelchair. Tears rolled down my cheeks and Tobias squeezed my hand as I wiped them on my sleeve.
David was in the room too, signing a form. His legs were incased in plaster and his arm was bandaged and had stiches. After signing the form, he rolled out of the room in his wheelchair, not staying for what was next. The doctors began unplugging the machines and the tears came faster. Zeke and Hana grabbed hands over Uriah and began praying. Did the Dauntless have prayers for the dying?
The sustained beep sounded, signaling he was gone. Tobias folded me into his arms as I began sobbing.
“Shh,” he said, kissing my head. “It’s okay. He’s in heaven. You’ll see him again one day.” I nodded because there was nothing else to do. Tobias walked me slowly back to the dormitory, arms cradling and comforting me as we went. The crying was soon over, but I could never forget Uriah’s smiling face.
The next day was a blur. Now that I was healed, those who had stayed at the compound were preparing to leave. It did not take long to pack our things, and we were leaving tomorrow. I decided that I would not miss this place. I was packing some food when Tobias came up to me.
“Want to take a walk?” he asked.
“Sure,” I replied. I wondered what could possibly be wrong. Tobias never asked to go for a walk.
We went through the dormitory and into the garden.
“What’s up?” I asked, thinking of all the possible things that could be up.
“I need to ask you something.” Tobias took my hands in his. He got down on one knee. “Beatrice Prior, I promise I won’t go anywhere. I will not leave you for anything. The entire world could not pull us apart. Will you please, please marry me?”
I was stunned. My throat tightened and my limbs went numb. I barely managed to nod and choke out the word.
“Yes,” I say back. “Yes, ten thousand times.” He met my eyes again. Getting up, Tobias pulled a simple metal band from his pocket.
“I know that it’s not much, but- “
“I don’t care. I love it,” I tell him. “I love you.” Tobias put one hand on my waist and the other in my hair. He kissed me, and I kissed him back with all I had. We stayed like this for a long time until someone shouted at us.
“Hey! Lovebirds!” It was Christina. We turned around to face her. She spotted my glowing face and looked down at my hand as if she knew what would happen all along. Christina stood there for a moment and then ran to me.
“I knew it!” she shouted. “I knew this would happen! I’m so happy for you.” Then she looked serious. “Now for the real reason I came out here. We are leaving in an hour. Mathew already has our apartments; they’re by Amity Headquarters. I can tell him you guys only need one if you want.”
“That would be great. Christina, do you think you could get everyone here in half an hour?” Tobias glanced at me. “And we’re going to need a preacher.”
“Of course. Anything else?” I shake my head. The shock died down now; I too was giddy with excitement to register that, though.
Half an hour later there were eight chairs in the garden, each with a person in one. Shawna sat in her wheelchair next to Zeke. Caleb had found a book with wedding vows in them, how I do not know. Christina stands on a raised platform between Tobias and myself. We are wearing simple clothes, there was no need for fancy ones. Tobias took my hands in his. Christina looks at me then Tobias.
“Do you, Tobias Eaten, take Beatrice Prior to be your loftily wedded wife, in sickness or in health, for better or for worse, until death do you part?” she said formally.
“I do,” came Tobias’s reply.
“And do you, Beatrice Prior, take Tobias Eaten as your loftily wedded husband, in sickness or in health, for better or for worse, until death do you part?”
“I do,” I tell her. The words were almost stuck in my throat, not wanting to ruin the beauty of the moment.
“Any objections?” I have a feeling Christina only asked that because she had to. No one raised their hand, not even Evalyn, who had come to the compound days ago. “Good,” Christina continued. “By the power invested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife.” She looked at us. Then her formal voice broke into an exasperated one. “Go ahead and kiss her,” she said to Tobias.
Tobias continued to look at me, straight in the eye, like he had been this entire time. Moving his hands from mine, he put them on my face and kissed me. We kissed for so long that Christina had to clear her throat.
“Now go!” she said. “We’ve got a flight to catch!” In the interest of time and planes, we had all agreed to take a plane to the city. Everyone except Tobias, that is, but he was outnumbered. The women gather behind me as Christina hands me a bouquet of flowers. I toss them behind me and turn around to see who caught them. It was Cara.
Tobias grabs my hand.
“Come on!” he yells. We run back into the building and find the correct gate number, then race onto the plane. I sit in a window seat and Tobias sits beside me. Reaching over, he closes the blind and takes deep breaths. I look up at him.
“It’s okay,” I say. “It’s a short flight. It will be over soon.” He looks at me, then kisses me. Caleb, who is sitting across the aisle, looks away, but I don’t care. Tobias pulls back and I whisper, “I love you.”
“I love you, too,” he says. I rest my head on his shoulder and he kisses it. “I love you, Mrs. Eaten.”
“Mrs. Eaten,” I say, trying the words on my tongue. “I like that.”
“Oh, will you two give it a rest, already?” Christina says, annoyed by our affection for each other. “We get it, you’re married. Save it for the apartment.” I chuckle and so does Tobias. He confessed to me that when he first met Christina, he didn’t like her because he took her as a Candor loud-mouth. I almost laugh at the thought, but I hold myself back now that the plane is moving and Tobias looks like he just saw a ghost. We could close our window blind, but we couldn’t close everyone else’s.
We finally land. Tobias’s jaw becomes unclenched as he takes my waist. We are standing in an open field just before the fence. It is open now, open to anyone who wants to enter. Mathew takes us to a nearby car. A few people decided to stay at the compound, including Zoë, Amar, and Evalyn. Everyone else piles into the car on the way to the apartments. Tobias and I get in the back with Christina, Cara, and Caleb. Caleb has expressed his thanks to me many times since the past week. I think I might have to put him a near death situation to make him stop if he keeps it up.
“Here we are,” says Mathew as we stop in front of a large brick building. “Your apartments are on the fifth floor. They your numbers on them, the same one as on this key.” He hands everyone a key, passing one of the same to Tobias and I. “Now go. They’re all empty, so you’ve got a lot of shopping to do.”
We walk into the building. On either side of our apartment stand Christina and Zeke.
“Oh, great,” Christina grumbles. “I have to sleep next to the happy couple.” I laugh, and so does everyone around us. Christina has become the source of laughter now since Uriah’s passing, and I wonder how that even happened. Christina walks into her apartment grumbling, and I look at Tobias.
“Want to do the honors?” I say. He nods and puts the key into the lock. The door swings open, revealing an empty apartment, just as Mathew had said. I start to walk in, but before I take another step, Tobias sweeps me off my feet and walks us both in. We laugh and he sets me down. Maybe, even after all that has happened, we can start a new life here. Maybe, just maybe, everything will be okay, and everything is over. Starting over will be so wonderful.
Epilogue
Two years later
The light shined through the window of the newly renovated building. This was my job now: renovator. I loved it. It was so simple. I could fix broken things and mend the things that need mending. It was my dream job.
On my way home from work, a path of which I walked, I spotted Peter. Ever since he had taken the memory serum, we had become good friends. Now he was opening a door for a family of five, obviously from the Fringe. I waved and he waved back. He was still working; his job being relocating new people. Peter often worked with Christina, who had that job as well. Tobias had become a politicians’ assistant. He would become one himself soon. Caleb and Cara got married a few weeks ago, as did Zeke and Shawna. All of them worked in labs.
I walked through the front door of the apartment. Since we had gotten here, we had filled the small two-bedroom with little furniture. It only had a couch, a table and chairs, a bed and dresser in each room, and a small arm chair.
Tobias found me in the doorway. He always got home before me.
“Guess what,” he said, looking at me, arms finding my waist. “We have the whole night to ourselves. Christina is taking a vacation, so we’ll have no interruptions.”
“What about Zeke?” I ask. Knowing him, he will probably take Christina’s place tonight.
“He and Shawna went on another attempt at a honeymoon.” At the first try at a honeymoon, Hector got into a serious car accident with a friend, so they had to come home right away.
“Perfect,” I say. He kisses me quickly, then leads me to the kitchen to eat. There is lasagna on the counter, and we both eat while talking. We finish and he takes my hands. Now he takes me to the blue-gray walls of the bedroom, kicking closed the door as he kisses me.
This was not forever. This was not a fairy tale. This was us, him and me, for as long as we both shall live.
