These 5 books are some of my favorite books ever, but none of them are very popular. I will give a brief review and short summary for each one that I hope will make you want to read them!
1. The Scourge by Jennifer Nielsen. I just finished reading this book. It is incredible. The main character, Ani Mells, is so brilliant. She is probably the mentally strongest main character ever. She is so full of adventure, and often crosses the fine line between brave and stupid, like most main characters. She is an amazing girl. In this story, there is a fatal disease called the Scourge that is sweeping through Keldan, her country. She lives in the mountains among the River People. The governor of Keldan has created an island for Scourge victims to stay so they don't get other people sick, and Ani has heard that it isn't pleasant. But one day, everything changes. She is captured by warders and tested for the disease, and she is shocked to find that she tested positive, even though she felt fine before the testing. Ani is sent to the island with the other sick people and her best friend, Weevil. But something is odd about the island and even the Scourge itself, and Ani and Weevil must figured out what's going on, revealing shocking secrets.
Arrrgghh, it is killing me not to tell more! But I won't.
2. A Mango-Shaped Space by Wendy Mass. This book is so heart felt. I loved it. It is about a girl named Mia who finds out she is different from everyone else. She has a special condition called synesthesia. She has struggled to belong because of it. She experiences losses and heartbreaks, and there isn't really much to explain. You just have to read it to experience the magic. It is also funny. I really recommend this book.
3. The Lie Tree by Frances Hardinge. This book is so clever! It is really amazing and perfectly put together. It also shows how badly "ladies" were thought of in older times. A girl named Faith and her family is forced to move away from Kent, their home, and to an island called Vane because of her father. He is a paleontologist, someone who digs up dinosaur bones (I hope that's correct), and his latest discovery was found to be fake. While moving into the strange new house on Vane, she discovers a mysterious plant of her father's. She reads in an old journal that states that the plant produces fruit when you tell it a lie, and when you eat the fruit, a secret related to the lie you told it is revealed. Faith must find out if this is true, without making things go horribly wrong.
And again, there is so much more I want to tell you, but I don't want to spoil it.
4. Peter Nimble and his Fantastic Eyes by Jonathan Auxier. I have already talked about how awesome this book is and why it's so awesome, but I will give a brief summary. There is a boy named Peter whose eyes were pecked out when he was a baby. He is an orphan, and he was taken in by a cruel man who makes him steal things for him, and gives him almost nothing in return. One day, a mysterious man comes to town, and long story short, Peter finds a box of eggs and decides to keep it, but not give them to his master. He discovers that inside each of the three eggs is a pair of eyes, and he puts in one of the pairs. He is immediately transported to magical place, and he is sent on a quest to . . . well, I can't spoil anything. Again, this book has one of the best endings ever, and it is so full of action! I definitely recommend it.
5. A Tangle of Knots by Lisa Graff. This book is very entertaining and touching. There is an orphan named Cady who has a special Talent: cakes. She can determine what a person's cake is by just being around them for a little bit. To be perfectly honest, I don't actually remember very much about this book, only that I loved it and finished it in a couple of days when I was nine or ten. I will probably re-read it sometime soon, and then I can write a better review.
Okay, those are 5 unpopular books that totally deserve to be popular. I hope you decide to read some of them! Thanks for reading!
